“We believe we are indispensable not just because we do things the other exchanges can do, but more importantly because we can do what they cannot do.”
Those are the words of WISHIN CEO Steve Rottmann, who is often asked why WISHIN should be the choice for health information exchange as opposed to exchange capabilities native to an EHR.
“WISHIN does not exist to compete with EHRs but to fill in the data gaps that exist to paint a clearer picture about a patient’s health.,” Rottmann said. “We aim to SUPPORT any exchange methodologies our participants use. WISHIN serves all, from the largest health system to the smallest home health agency.”
WISHIN is Wisconsin’s state-designated vendor-agnostic health information exchange. Dr. Mark Lodes, the Chief Medical Officer for Population Health at Froedtert and Medical College of Wisconsin, recognizes not every organization can afford Epic. He also understands the value of having a statewide HIE that can gather and share information outside of Froedtert’s Epic system.
“While Epic systems do talk to one another and we can see that information, not everyone is on Epic,” Lodes said. “The information that exists in other systems does not always flow over. WISHIN has been that connector. It’s really indispensable.”
When Ascension was victimized by a cyberattack in 2024, the organization was forced to shut down its EHR. WISHIN stepped in, with its 2-factor authentication, and helped Ascension as a business continuity solution, enabling providers to access critical medical, surgical and medication records. “We were really grateful to have (WISHIN) access, and it helped significantly in the care of our patients,” said Dr. Chintan Desai, CMO-Hospitals for Ascension Wisconsin. “WISHIN turned the corner for us from a care delivery standpoint during the cyberattack.”
